Sagenhafte 72 Millionen US-Dollar an Einnahmen machte Multitalent Rihanna bereits im ersten Monat nach der Lancierung ihrer Makeup-Kollektion «Fenty Beauty», mit der sie insbesondere in Bezug auf Foundations nach eigenen Aussagen eine Marktlücke füllen wollte. 

«Das mittlere Spektrum ist wirklich gut versorgt. Aber wenn man sehr hell oder sehr dunkel ist, gibt es bei Foundations nicht wirklich viele Optionen. Ich wollte darum sicherstellen, dass Frauen aller Hautfarben versorgt sind und das habe ich auch geschafft», sagte Superstar Riri damals, die durch ihren kommerziellen Erfolg mit Fenty Beauty die viele grosse Beauty-Brands zur längst fälligen Erweiterung der Farbpaletten für Makeup inspirierte.  

«The Fenty» Effekt nennt man dieses Phänomen in der Fachsprache, von dem ich wegen der Philosophie dahinter voll begeistert bin. Obwohl es für meine Hautfarbe schon vorher genügend Auswahl an Foundations gab und ich im Übrigen gar nie eine Foundation verwende: Ganz im Gegensatz zu Beauty-Influencerin Shazna aus Basel mit Wurzeln in Sri Lanka (Du findest sie auf Instagram sowie Youtube ), die nicht nur ein echter Makeup-Profi, sondern auch ein riesiger Goldschatz ist. Und darum exklusiv auf sonrisa verrät, wie POC (People of color) die richtige Foundation finden.

«Als ich ungefähr 13 Jahre alt war, kaufte ich meine erste Foundation in der Drogerie, wo es eine Auswahl von gerade mal fünf Farbtönen gab. Ich nahm die mittlere Nuance ohne sie zu testen und trug die Foundation erst daheim richtig auf. Natürlich war der Farbton viel heller als mein Hautton, aber zu jener Zeit hatte ich schlicht keine andere Wahl…

Einige Jahre später fand ich bei Mac Cosmetics endlich die erste passende Foundation für meinen Hautton. Damals war Mac Cosmetics einer der wenigen Brands mit einer wirklich grossen Auswahl an Farbtönen, aber mittlerweile gibt es zum Glück bei Foundations ein wirklich umfangreiches Angebot an Farbnuancen sowie Texturen von Puder über Creme, Mousse bis hin zum Stift. 

Bloss: Woher wissen POC, welches dies die richtige Foundation ist? 

Hier sind einige Tipps, die helfen könnten:

Wenn man einen Bronzer verwendet oder die Gesichtszüge mit einem dunklen Farbton betont – besser bekannt als Contouring –, sollte die Foundation ein bis zwei Farbtöne heller sein als die Haut. Durch das Vermischen mit den anderen Produkten ergibt das nämlich die perfekte Nuance.  

Die meisten Foundations oxidieren, das heisst, die Farbe wird im Verlauf des Tages etwas dunkler. Ausserdem ist das Licht im Laden immer anders als draussen oder in normal beleuchteten Räumen. Um einen Fehlkauf zu vermeiden, sollte man eine Foundation zunächst ausführlich testen. 

Wenn also ein Makeup Artist oder jemand vom Verkaufsteam sagt, «das ist genau Deine Foundation», sollte man darum freundlich, aber bestimmt nach um eine kleine Probe oder ein Muster verlangen oder darum bitten, das Produkt erst einmal ausprobieren zu können.

Ich empfehle meiner Kundschaft normalerweise eine Beratung bei Mac Cosmetics, weil es vor Ort immer einfach ist seinen Hautton zu finden als online (wobei es manchmal auch einfach ein bisschen Glück braucht dafür, um ehrlich zu sein). 

Am wichtigsten beim Kauf einer Foundation oder eines Concealers ist aber der Unterton der Haut, welcher nicht mit der Hautfarbe verwechselt werden sollte.

Zur Erklärung: Der Hautton ist die Farbe an der Oberfläche, also hell, mittel oder dunkel. Beim Unterton hingegen handelt es sich – wie der Name sagt – um die Farbe unter der Oberfläche. Im Gegensatz zum Hautton, der sich je nach Sonneneinstrahlung ändern kann, bleibt der Unterton immer gleich.

Insgesamt unterscheidet man in der Beauty-Branchen vier Arten von Untertönen: Warm (golden, gelb oder Pfirsichfarben), kalt (rosa, rot oder blau), Neutral (eine Mischung aus warm und kalt) sowie Olive (grünlich-gelb). 

Um seinen Unterton herauszufinden, gibt es zwei Methoden: 

a) Nimm ein weisses Papier und halte es bei natürlichem Licht an Dein Gesicht. Wenn die Haut im Vergleich dazu rosig wirkt, hast Du einen kühlen Unterton. Sieht das Gesicht eher gelb aus, ist Dein Unterton warm. Und falls sowohl warme als auch kalte Untertöne funktionieren, hast Du vermutlich einen neutralen Unterton. 

b) Ebenfalls hilfreich bei der Bestimmung des Untertons sind die Adern am Handgelenk. Sehen sie leicht grün aus? Wenn ja, ist Dein Unterton warm. Haben sie einen Blaustich oder sogar einen Hauch von Violett, solltest Du Foundations und Concealers mit kühlen Untertönen wählen. Und wer sowohl grünliche als auch bläuliche Adern hat, braucht neutrale Untertöne. 

Ich selbst, übrigens, benutze aktuell die Fenty Beauty Hydrating Foundation, denn ich mag meinen Teint lieber mit einem natürlichen Glow als matt. Aber letztlich ist das eine Frage des Geschmacks und inzwischen gibt es ja wie bereits erwähnt für jeden Hauttypen und auch für jeden Hautton das passende Produkt. 

Und weil das jetzt ziemlich viele Informationen auf’s Mal waren, fasse ich zum Abschluss die wichtigsten Regeln für POC beim Kauf von Foundations nochmals zusammen: 

• Bestimme immer zuerst Deinen Unterton

• Kauf die Foundation ein bis zwei Farbtöne heller als in Deinen Hautton 

• Teste eine neue Foundation immer zuerst am Counter oder, noch besser, bitte um ein Muster.

• Bestimme Deinen aktuellen Hautton (der sich ändern kann, nicht vergessen!)

• Wenn Du weisst, welcher MAC-Farbton Deiner Haut entspricht, kannst Du per Google herausfinden, welche Nuance eines anderen Brands Deinem Hautton entspricht. Das macht das Online-Shopping von Foundations um einiges einfacher. 

• Unbedingt vermeiden: Einen zu dunklen Farbton kaufen

• Ist der Hals wie bei mir dunkler als das Gesicht, sollte keine Foundation verwendet werden, weil die Haut sonst gräulich aussieht. Wer trotzdem eine Foundation tragen möchte, dem rate ich zur Color-Correcting Methode, bei welcher der Hals vor der Grundierung mit der Konträrfarbe (orange) geschminkt wird. 

Der wichtigste Tipp hat aber nichts mit Makeup zu tun: 

Vergiss nie, dass wahre Schönheit von Innen kommt. 

In diesem Sinne: Bleib positiv, lächle viel, ernähre Dich gesund, trink viel Wasser und pflege Deine Haut, denn eine schöne Haut bildet die Basis für jedes gute Makeup.

«When I was young (I think when I was 13 years old) I got my first foundation from a drugstore which had only five shades available and I took the middle one. I tried it at home for the first time. I looked fair. The shade was much lighter than my skin tone. But I didn’t have any other option than to use this foundation. 

A few years later I got my first proper foundation from MAC Cosmetics. MAC Cosmetics was one of the first brand with a huge range of shades. Now we have many brands and many sorts of foundations. Powder, Cream, Liquid, Stick and so on.

But how do we know this is the right foundation?

Here are some tips which could help you:

Your foundation must be one (sometimes even two) shades lighter than your skin tone. This is because when you use bronzer or contour then the foundation will blend it all together and give the perfect look to your face

Most foundation do oxidize. That means a while after wearing the foundation it gets a little bit darker. That’s why I always recommend to get a sample of that foundation at the counter. Or you can ask them to put that foundation on your face and you can check at home if it’s still your shade. Because the light at the store is different compared to the daylight outside. Don’t buy a darker shade as you can’t do anything with it expect buying a lighter shade and mix with it together (which is a lot of work and not every time you will get the same mixed colour).

If a Makeup artist at any counter tells you THIS IS YOUR FOUNDATION you have to kindly and strictly say to them that you want a sample or try the foundation first before buying it.

I usually recommend my clients to find out their shades at MAC Cosmetics which can make a little bit easier to buy foundations online (but sometimes it’s just the luck to pick the right shade online). But the most important thing is you need to find out your undertones. When shopping for foundation or concealer, your undertone does sometimes play a role in choosing the right shade.

Don’t confuse skin tone with undertone. Skin tone is the colour on the surface (fair, medium, or deep). Undertone is exactly like the name, the colour under the surface. Unlike skin tone, under tone stays the same, even if the skin tone changes.

There are few types of undertones:

Warm: Golden, yellow, or peachy

Cool: Pink, red, or blue

Neutral: A mixture of the above

Olive: Greenish-yellow

How to find out your undertone:

a) Take a white paper. In natural light hold the paper up to your face. If your skin looks pink or rosy by comparison, you’re cool toned. If your face looks more yellow, your undertone is warm. If you feel you look better in off-white or creamy hues, that you may be warm toned. If you can wear both colours without feeling like you look washed out, you may have a neutral undertone (Olive tones often work well with warm-neutral shades to balance out the green).

b) The best way to determine your undertone is to look at the veins in your wrist under natural light. Do they look slightly green? If so, you’re warm. If your veins have more of a blue tint or even a hint of purple, your undertones are cool. If you see a mix, then you may have neutral undertones. 

There are many brands and types of foundations available in the market. Currently I love the Fenty Beauty Hydrating foundation. They have many shades available. I don’t like a complete matt look. A little bit dewy look gives a nice glowy and hydrated face. And it can look natural as well. Matt looks can often look heavy but everyone’s taste is different. Fenty Beauty Hydrating Foundation is between Dewy and Matt. As I have oily skin type its get more dewy throughout the day. But the foundation itself is oil-free. This foundation is perfect for my skin type. Matt or Dewy… just go for what you feel comfortable with.

And as this is a lot of information, I did a short summary for you with the most important rules for finding the perfect foundation for colored skin:

Do’s

• First find out your undertones

• Buy 1-2 shade lighter than your skin tone

• Always try a new foundation at the counter before buying it or ask them for a sample.

• Find out your MAC shade which can make your online purchase easier (sometimes). You ask why? Because once you found your MAC Cosmetics shade number, you can often google what the shade for your MAC-shade of other brands is.

• Find out your skin type to buy the right foundation.

Don’t’s

• Buying a darker shade is a no go.

• Using a foundation when the neck is darker than the face like it’s the case with me. I normally avoid foundation for my neck as it would look greyish. When I use contour on my face I feel like it does balance it with the darker neck. But if you really want to have your neck the same shade as your skin, use colour corrector (orange) and then apply foundation to your neck. I would probably do this for weddings or any big occasion. 

Before I finish, I want to remind you to the most important rule which has nothing to do with makeup: 

Always remember. Inner Beauty counts more. 

So be positive, smile a lot, eat healthy, drink plenty of water and also do some nice skincare. A clear skin plays a huge role for a smooth makeup application.
